Bernard Racing 2010/2011 Motorcycle
Road Race Team

Due to limited time and budget restraints the Bernard Racing Team were not planning to contest the NZ National Road Race Championship’s this season. The plan was to develop a team for the International Tri-Series events and be better prepared for the 2012 National Motorcycle Road Race Season. But the teams fantastic results at Wanganui made many people take notice and it seemed a logical move to invite Dan Stauffer to continue on to compete in the NZ National Series.

When our close friend and team sponsor, Graham “Spyda” Staples, of The Electric Spider Ltd. had a look into the Cemetery Circuit archives, he found that Dan Stauffer was the first new comer to win the feature race at the circuit in over 40 years! “When Australian Motorcycle racer, Dan Stauffer, won the Robert Holden Memorial race on the Cemetery Circuit last boxing day history was made.

The last time a Newcomer took a win in the main feature race on the tight 1.6km circuit was forty-one years ago, in 1969 when American rider Ron Grant crossed the line on his Suzuki TR500.

What made this win even more special for Wanganui's Brian Bernard and the Bernard Racing Team, was the fact that neither he nor most of his team expected it to happen. This together with the fact that Bernard Racing had to sit out last season, a casualty of the recession, with not enough resources to compete put this icing on the cake for the team owner and manager.”

This achievement was made sweeter for the team as the bikes were basically stock with stock suspension competing against full blown superbikes with specialized suspension. Dan had very limited time on this bike with having to sit out the Manfield round due to prior race commitments in Australia, so had only the Hampton Down’s event to get used to the Yamaha before Cemetery Circuit.  Learning the track at Cemetery Circuit is always a challenge for a new comer and this would be Dan’s first street event. With limited seat time on his R1, it was a challenge that he met with style and professionalism, impressing us all with his fantastic results and good nature.

The natural conclusion was to carry on and head south for the National Series and see what Dan could do on a Superbike spec R1. Brian has been steadily transforming the standard Yamaha R1 into a Superbike and

says “we have the right package to contest the National Superbike Title this season with Dan , Yamaha and Pirelli on board. Our sponsors and supporters have really come to the party to get us to the National rounds and we plan to do them justice by taking out the Championship title! With some luck on our side to keep things running smoothly, we’re in with a good shot.”
